Antique Greyhound Bookend Repair

Here’s an antique greyhound bookend that a customer brought in to us. Unfortunately, this piece was broken and cracked in a number of places, which is something we see a lot of with these more detailed, antique figurines.

Luckily for our customer, we're pretty familiar with this type of thing and were able to immediately get to work reattaching the damaged sections.

After all of the contents of the box were back in one piece, we 3D scanned the surviving feet, brought them into our 3D modeling software to create the opposite, missing ones, and re-casted them new. Going about these types of repairs in this way has a number of benefits, but the main ones are the continuity associated with recasting the missing sections out of a similar base metal, and durability.

Whether the customer wants to have this plated, painted or left raw, its ready for a few more decades on the book shelf.

Greyhound bookends, in particular, seem to be fairly popular amongst antique collectors, so we've done quite a few of these over the years. Like most statues and figurines, legs are a common failure point so we've gotten pretty good at making and welding on new ones.

If you have a similar issue with your pot metal or spelter project, we love to help!
